Two Weeks In: Messi Makes History, Cabo Verde Charms the World, and Chattanooga Shows Up

The first two weeks of the FIFA World Cup 2026 have delivered everything we hoped for: incredible goals, dramatic finishes, surprise results, and packed watch parties across Chattanooga. As the group stage builds to its thrilling finish, here's a look back at the moments that have made this tournament special — and what's still to come.

History, drama, and a debutant's dream run

We've already seen history made. Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, adding another chapter to one of the sport's greatest careers.

But one of the tournament's best stories has been the rise of Cabo Verde's "Blue Sharks." In their first-ever World Cup appearance, the islanders have captured hearts around the world, earning remarkable draws against both Spain and Uruguay. The United States has looked strong, and fans have been treated to genuinely entertaining matches from teams across every continent.

Spain calls Chattanooga home

There's been plenty of local interest, too. Spain, who have made Chattanooga their base camp for the tournament, bounced back from a difficult opening match. With Lamine Yamal in the starting lineup on Sunday, La Roja showed flashes of the quality that could make them contenders for the trophy.

It's not every day that one of the world's soccer powers calls Chattanooga home during the World Cup, and it's been exciting to watch their journey unfold from right here in our city. At the riverfront watch parties, supporters have lined the route to cheer Spain's motorcade as it traveled to and from matches, while others have been lucky enough to catch glimpses of stars like Rodri, Lamine Yamal, and other members of the Spanish squad around town.

The group-stage finale is here

Today marks the final day of the second round of group-stage matches. Beginning tomorrow, the tournament enters one of its most exciting stretches: the final group-stage games.

From Wednesday through Saturday, there will be six matches each day, with the final games in each group kicking off two at a time as teams battle for places in the knockout rounds. We'll start learning who advances along the way, but we won't know all 32 teams moving on until the final whistle on Saturday.

Then, on Sunday, the knockout rounds begin. From that point on, every match is win-or-go-home. (You can follow every match, kickoff time, and host city on our full tournament schedule.)

The Bracket Challenge is taking shape

Our World Cup Bracket Challenge is starting to separate, too. As results become official, more points lock in and the standings begin to spread out. As of today, Grace sits atop the leaderboard — but there is still a lot of soccer left to play.

You can check your position anytime on the Bracket Challenge leaderboard.

A city coming together

Most importantly, it's been fantastic to see Chattanooga's soccer community come together. Fans have packed venues like the Chattanooga Green, White Duck Taco, Barlery, Barrelhouse Ballroom, and many others to cheer on teams from around the world.

One of the best parts of this tournament has been seeing people who may support different clubs, countries, and players come together to enjoy the world's game. The matches have been great, but so has the community that has formed around them.

What's been your favorite watch party experience so far? We'd love to hear about the matches, moments, and venues that have made this World Cup special for you. If you're watching from one of your favorite Chattanooga spots, tag us on Instagram @chattanoogasoccerfans so we can share the experience with the rest of the community.

Whether it's a packed room celebrating a last-minute goal, cheering Spain's team bus, or a small group gathering for an early kickoff, we want to see how Chattanooga is experiencing the World Cup.

Keep checking ChattanoogaSoccerFans.com for the latest on where to watch with sound on, and get ready for an exciting finish to the group stage before the knockout rounds begin on Sunday.

The best is still to come.
